ExxonMobil partnered with Evolve Cloud Services and AWS to conduct an Optimization & Licensing Assessment (OLA) — identifying over $1.2M in potential annual savings across their AWS environment.
ExxonMobil, one of the world’s largest publicly traded energy companies, operates a significant and complex AWS footprint across multiple business units. As cloud spend grew, ExxonMobil engaged Evolve Cloud Services to conduct an AWS Optimization & Licensing Assessment (OLA) — a structured, AWS-funded process to identify waste, right-size compute, and rationalise licensing across their environment.
At enterprise scale, cloud cost inefficiency hides in layers: oversized EC2 instances provisioned during peak planning, SQL Server and Windows Server licenses running on infrastructure that could support BYOL or open-source alternatives, and reserved capacity that no longer matches actual workload patterns. ExxonMobil needed an independent, data-driven view of exactly where spend could be reduced without impacting operations.
Empower™ is Evolve's proprietary licensing intelligence engine. It maps your full Microsoft estate — EA entitlements, Software Assurance status, BYOL eligibility, RDS and EC2 licence-included vs bring-your-own splits, and CAL consumption — against your actual AWS deployment inventory. The output is a line-by-line cost reconciliation with projected savings per action, delivered before your next renewal deadline.
Evolve ran a full OLA across ExxonMobil’s AWS environment, covering EC2 fleet analysis, storage tier review, licensing overlap identification, and Reserved Instance/Savings Plan coverage modelling. The assessment mapped every commercial Microsoft workload running on AWS against BYOL eligibility and open-source migration pathways, then produced a prioritised recommendation report with projected savings per action.
The OLA delivered a clear, actionable roadmap. ExxonMobil’s cloud team was able to begin implementing right-sizing and licensing changes immediately following the assessment, with the highest-priority actions projected to recover the majority of identified savings within the first 90 days. The engagement was funded through the AWS Migration Acceleration Program, meaning ExxonMobil carried no assessment cost.
